Ask HN: How did your company transition from releases to continuous delivery?

The company I work for is in the midst of trying to change from release branching to continuous delivery - there are a lot of resources online talking about how it should be done, but what are some real experiences from HNers? Are there workplaces/projects where this won't ever work?
