Ask HN: Tips for getting referral bonuses as an engineer

Hi all,

Like most tech companies, my employer offers a pretty significant referral bonus.

However, I don't know how professional it will seem to reach out to engineers that I don't know well and offer them a referral. Are there any social guidelines for this?

Do those of you on HN have any tips for finding engineers to refer?
