Ask HN: Are DevOps increasingly becoming managers to Software Eng. teams?

Hi,

I notice a recent trend where DevOps are managers to Software Engineer teams. I am wondering if there is any industry trends influencing this change, or it is a subjective observation that I personally hold. So I would like to hear what you all think.

I believe this change is influenced by the trends in infrastructures we depend on, as programmers. As our code is becoming more pluggable; with approaches like serverless or microservices.

Control over modularity of our code, also means control over the people that produce it. Thus it definitely makes some sense.

But there are many aspects of production of software engineering, that needs special care and attention other than the aforementioned modular pieces it produces as services.

Do you agree?

Where does this take us as Software Engineers?

Do you face any challenges with your work in connection with this?

Do you feel less or more ownership as our produce becomes more pluggable/modular small pieces of the whole puzzle?

I am sure I will get some responses as "All programmers need to know DevOps!"
