Ask HN: Is the stock market (DJIA included) being gamed by FUD in social media?

So I just saw the stock market fell 500 pts. this morning.

I was wondering if traders are hyping each other up to reduce confidence in stocks in order to short them. Does fear-mongering seem the probable proximate cause of this? Is it some sort of culture of paranoid over-reaction or defensive portfolio calculation?
