Ask HN: What tools do you use to track user events in a user funnel? (GTM?)

Trying to see the actions each user takes on a basic sign up flow. Trying to get the data points to see which users convert from visit > register > use product > pay.

Is Google Tag Manager the de-facto standard for funnel optimization? I'm a developer, so I'm looking for a tool to implement directly in the code.
