Ask HN: What's the best strategy to sunset a personal domain?

When I got married about five years ago I had created a personal website under a personal domain. While we have quite common names, we are showing up quite high on Google queries.

Now I would like to cancel the domain registration. How do I do this while minimizing the potential SEO gains for domain scammers?

My current plan:

1. Removing the page from the Google index with the removal tool and a `robots.txt`.

2. A couple of days later remove the DNS entry altogether.

3. A couple of days later cancel the domain.

Any other suggestions?
