Ask HN: What do you use for personal news alerts/news monitoring?

Hello.

I'm looking for an open source tool or library for setting up complex monitoring of different types of sources (news, academic journals, websites, RSS, etc.).

No commercial or GUI news feeds, as they are severely limited in filtering and flexibility.
