Ask HN: How would a mortgage and rent holiday work, legally?

From what I've seen, without something like a break on rent or mortgages many businesses will have to close permanently and workers who work paycheck to paycheck could be evicted.

Is there any legal basis for doing a holiday? Given they're all individual contracts, is it possible to supercede them?
