Ask HN: Is there anything usurping WebRTC?

Considering starting a video conferencing service as I have been frustrated with some of the limitations of available services I have tried.

It seems strange to me that webrtc was last released almost 2 years ago now?

Is it perfect? Nothing could possibly be upgraded on it in the past 2 years?

Is a big overhaul in the works and web standards just move slowly?

Just curious if I should be looking somewhere else to stream video from a smartphone to a webpage?
