The context that should be included here:

Many virology labs historically or currently perform this sort of work.

It's controversial (for risk reasons if not isolated), but incredibly useful.

By generating chimeric or enhanced viral strains, they can be more fully studied before they circulate in the general population.

I don't think this work is inherently morally questionable. I just got weird chills when I saw it got actively removed from the front-page of HN. There is another thread asking why this happened. If it turns out that there is a good reason then I am willing to accept that.
