Ask HN: How much did Soviet journalists contribute to the hype of Linux 1.0?
From Linus Torvalds' autobiography Just for Fun, his parents are "all basically journalists" as well as "overactive communists".
He gave a talk in 1994 when Linux 1.0 was published after three years of efforts on developing, and that talk attracted public media's attention, and finally on Finnish TV.
I just think it's not easy for a general geek to get this much attention. And Linux was not the only UNIX like kernel during that time.
I've red The Cathedral & the Bazaar. Linux is a successful combination of opensource and internet according to ESR. However, I haven't red someone talk about if communist propaganda made this combination happen.
Maybe I'm putting two and two together and make five. But does anyone has similar feeling with me?
