Ask HN: How to prepare to live in a Society with 32% Unemployment?

I do not mean to sound like an alarmist, but the FED project yesterday that they expect 47 MILLION americans to be unemployed from Corona virus related events That is a 32% unemployment rate.

The most the US has seen is under 10% unemployment. Even in those times, my uncles tell horror stories of standing in line for hours at gas stations to get a canister of gas.

My girl friend is freaking out cos she thinks there'll be anarchy. She wants me to get a gun (we live in Sunnyvale, California) cos she feels that society breaks down and people will be looting each other's supplies.

I'm not comfortable buying or owning a gun as that comes with it's own set of problems, esp in California. Should we move to Mexico? She's Mexican I am Indian.

Can anyone help me aleviate the fears? Or are they well founded? How are you preparing for this new world?
