It sounds like a good idea, but I would be careful and do some tests before running with it for good.

I've signed up for 3-4 launch lists in the last few days and everybody is hopping on this bandwagon. It's starting to turn me off. You don't want to do that to a potential early adopter.

At the end of the day it probably really depends who you're targeting. It might work better for social media marketing types than hacker types who don't want to be gamed for your gain.
