It's not on the Gates' Foundation radar but how about a very high quality, matching set of mask and glasses/goggles? Costing about $30.

The mask is reusable and the glasses fit very close to the skin around the eyes...perhaps even with a neoprene apron that seals against the face and the mask. It would also stop your hands from easily and unconsciously touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

The idea here is that, in public, it protects the wearer against others and protects others from the wearer. If widely adopted this gear would vastly reduce the cost of the "test and track" effort and everyone would just feel safer in public.

This virus is unlikely to be going away any time soon. Some say it will be with us for a "very long time" because even a vaccine is likely to be effective only over the short term and therefore the "herd immunity" will never really take place. We need to get serious about the long term strategy. This could be a one cheap, quick and effective tactic for reopening.

Interesting ..

For the record, I see that Hong Kong is taking this approach, at least with the reusable masks, one for every citizen.
Gates is loving the attention he's getting from this. I hate the guy personally.
Since its inception, the Gates Foundation has made total grant payments in excess of $50 billion.

I’d say that deserves attention.

As a thought experiment, if you loved positive attention and had more money than one man could privately spend in 100 lifetimes, what would you do with your resources?
I cannot imagine seeing someone be so unilaterally altruistic and still hating them. Why do you feel they are deserving of your hate?
Past sins, perhaps? I personally feel that Gates has done plenty to atone. But maybe others aren't so forgiving. I might feel differently if my company and livelihood had been destroyed by the heavy-handed tactics of 1990s Microsoft.
"The bigger the charity, the guiltier the conscience..."

Makes me wonder what the last generation of Gates did to these people he is now so intent on "helping".

Are you actually willing to learn, to at least consider whether a statement is true based on the merit of the facts presented, or will you categorically deny any source that isn't directly connected to legacy media?

If the latter, look into the 'right wing conspiracy theories' and discard what you see as weak evidence and disinformation. Build a case from the point of view opposite of your own, then compare this to the point of view you hold now. Ask yourself which one is more convincing, and why.

... What does this have to do with Bill Gates and why that guy hates him?
I ask you to reread my comment, in the context of this thread, and your question, and see if it eventually makes sense to you.

I checked over what I had written and find my meaning perfectly clear, so there is not much else I can do for you otherwise.

What statement am I being asked to consider as true? That this man hates bill gates?
OK, you obviously have a bias towards supporting the Bill Gates regime.

Please disclose your conflict of interest.

Ok, I confess.

I have a really obvious bias: objective reality.

There you go-- You've revealed your naïveté

You are not objective-- you're human. That alone makes you are biased, apparently in particular towards prideful emotions especially when folks like myself expose your bias (such as towards "Appeals to Authority"-- snopes for example-- when I enlightened you to the fact that snopes is embroiled in controversy calling their "information verfication" reputation into question).

Clearly you fail to recognize this.

That's why your comment was flagged, but my follow up comment with six real sources wasn't. Right. I am the naive one. This is no longer contributing to the conversation at hand.
Ok, but please don't post unsubstantive comments here.
Bill Gates has been pushing a rather creepy idea since the pandemic started: Have the government tattoo identity information into everyone's skin [1].

Pretty dystopian stuff. This is literally what the Nazis did to the Jews. I'm surprised Mr. Gates apparently isn't smart enough to see why encouraging this sort of thing is a real bad idea.

I am shocked an appalled to see that there is an anti-vaxx undertone present on HN.

A simple google search reveals that this information is false.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/bill-gates-id2020/

Please, @csense - this is only a digital certificate, one which is clearly designed not to actively track someone, but to provide much needed medical info in 3rd world countries who don't have the infrastructure to store vaccination records across borders.

Personally, I think you should be ashamed of making such a disingenuous connection.

(comment deleted)
Do you really want to be injected with a highly rushed vaccine that hasn't been tested for longterm side effects? Remember when they were putting asbestos into everything? Or when they were spraying neighborhoods with 'harmless' insecticides? Or when companies fudge results to pass regulations or performance specs. The world is not very different from where it was 50 years ago. I would rather get the rona than get an unproven vaccine.
I am confused - Before we were talking about ID2020, now suddenly it is about vaccines? And from a 12-day old account, no less.

A quick look at your comment history tells me you are only here to bridage the site with anti-vaxx messaging.

"I am confused, strawman strawman strawman, strawman?"
You people with your "anti-vaxx" everything, anti-anti-vaxx everything. It's all "right wing conspiracy". All you do is try to shame people into passively accepting whatever you've decided is True and Good, i.e., "science", the field of truth that produces "vaccines", and everything else that is Safe and Effective. So quick to attack skeptics and truth seekers as "right wing conspiracy theorists" like the good media audience that you are. You are simply Appalled! The OP ought to be Ashamed! A 12-day old account, must be a troll, spammer, Russiagate disinformation agent. Hey, it was Russia and the terrorists been injecting falsehoods into the lexicon to disrupt the fabric of our comfortable dream state all along, listen here. And you speak for the whole HN community, no less, with far-flung high-falutin self-obsessed pro-tag'n'track cattle herding ideas sent by billionaire human saviors. The great delusion is thinking that everything is exactly as it seems. Actors tell truths. Governments save lives. And if you think otherwise, then Doctor Skuthus says "Please seek help; you lack the mental faculties of my great erudition and are disordered in your thinking". Just some self-aggrandizing garbage toss, same as anywhere else, but with the protective coating of "HN is on my side guys".
I am shocked and appalled to see Snopes is believed to be a source of information validation on HN. Why-- Because Facebook told you so (facebook used Snopes for "fake news" verification)?

...Considering:

"'Fact checking' website Snopes on verge of collapse after founder is accused of fraud, lies, and putting prostitutes and his honeymoon on expenses (and it hasn't told its readers THOSE facts)"

"An Invisible Quantum Dot 'Tattoo' Could Be Used to ID Vaccinated Kids

"The invisible "tattoo" accompanying the vaccine is a pattern made up of minuscule quantum dots - tiny semiconducting crystals that reflect light - that glows under infrared light. The pattern - and vaccine - gets delivered into the skin using hi-tech dissolvable microneedles made of a mixture of polymers and sugar."

"So far, the system is mostly a proof of concept. But the researchers have already tried it out on rats and found that the patterns were still detectable nine months after injection."

"In human cadaver skin models, the patterns outlasted five years of simulated Sun exposure."

"It's possible someday that this 'invisible' approach could create new possibilities for data storage, biosensing, and vaccine applications that could improve how medical care is provided, particularly in the developing world," MIT professor and senior author Robert Langer said in the statement. "

I highly doubt you've read or verified any of those.

Your approach, as previously noted ("appeal to authority"), is flawed and defeats itself.

You are shilling for a billionaire, who has killed many in India and Africa via non-consenting vaccine testing & non-consenting vaccine-based sterilization.

INDIA:

Months later, many girls started falling ill and by 2010 five of them died. Two more deaths were reported from Vadodara, Gujarat, where an estimated 14,000 children studying in schools meant for tribal children were also vaccinated with another brand of HPV vaccine, Cervarix, manufactured by GSK.

The committee found that consent for conducting these studies, in many cases, was taken from the hostel wardens, which was a flagrant violation of norms. In many other cases, thumbprint impressions of their poor and illiterate parents were duly affixed onto the consent form. The children also had no idea about the nature of the disease or the vaccine. The authorities concerned could not furnish requisite consent forms for the vaccinated children in a huge number of cases."

You are very clever with your presentation of shifty data. However, every time you share, your arguments fall apart under basic scrutiny.

https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/apr/23/facebook-p...

https://factcheck.thedispatch.com/p/did-bill-gates-test-unap...

Also you should read your own sources - the NPR article in particular supports literally none of your argument -

"The danger in the 21st century, in the age of social media and the age of anti-vaxxers is not that the donors will lose interest and be fatigued because they've shown to be very patient," Noymer says. "But rather that populations will start saying, you know, we're sick of this." He says the real threat could be that parents no longer see any reason to get their kids repeatedly vaccinated against a disease that they don't see anywhere around them. "And then, of course, you get more people who are susceptible to polio if that were to come to pass."

By the way, if you look on those fact-check websites you despise so much, you'll notice that they source things incredibly well and all sources are real, non-article sourced documents, instead of flimsy single-page source documents like the ones you find on anti-vax, anti-globalist sites.

Finally, I would love to know what the final linked article you provided has to do with anything we are talking about, other than containing the word sterilization?

First of all, I'm not anti-vax. When there's an approved vaccine for coronavirus, I'll get it myself, and urge everyone I know to do the same.

Second, let's think for a few seconds how this technology would actually work in practice.

The technology is a method which allows you to put a few bits of information into the skin. Presumably it's permanent, non-user-visible and non-user-removable.

From there it's protocol design. Option (a), you could store the data of which vaccines directly on the person. Option (b), you could store some kind of ID number to an online database.

We can have a fine flamewar over the merits and drawbacks of Option (a) vs Option (b). But I think it's safe to assume there's maybe a 50% chance they'll end up going with Option (b).

This is pretty worrying. You state the fact it'll presumably only be deployed in Africa, but this is not reassuring. In African countries, it seems like it happens frequently that the government decides this week, it's your tribe's turn for genocide. In this case you'd want to make a run for it, escape your tribe's normal haunts where the death squads will be out in force.

Of course you could sneak across a border, or openly walk into a foreign customs post and ask for asylum, but changing countries has its own set of risks and problems.

An alternative survival strategy would be to simply destroy your identifying documents, if you ever had any, and try to blend in somewhere else. If your identifying document's a non-removable tattoo, you can't do this.

The technology is not currently being implemented in the manufacturing process for any vaccine currently being made. To suggest otherwise is disingenuous. As an example of the damage that suggestion does, look no further than the other comments under your post - This is fuel for the fire if you're part of the anti-vax crowd.

I also want to point out that blockchain identification is inherent in the design of ID2020, so even if it was implemented, it would not give a central database a way to track everyone, only a way to look up an individuals vaccine history at the time of scan, similar to how Google and Microsoft's data sharing for COVID is operating.

> Personally, I think you should be ashamed of making such a disingenuous connection.

The flagged comment has not even hinted at being anti-vax. You are the one who should be ashamed, but in this thread the authoritarians / MSFT lobby [1] apparently prevails.

[1] Which is huge on HN.

Herein lies the answer.

You, my good human, have called it. MSFT shills out in force today.

Lest we not forget the ethics of MSFT and Bill Gates:

Embrace, extend, and extinguish

""Embrace, extend, and extinguish" (EEE),[1] also known as "embrace, extend, and exterminate",[2] is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found[3] was used internally by Microsoft[4] to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences in order to strongly disadvantage its competitors."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguis...

/thread

. I didn't mention anti-vax sentiment as the reason they should be ashamed, I was referring to the suggestion that ID2020 is in any way applicable to the current COVID crisis. It isnt.

2. I have no affiliation with Microsoft, and neither does Bill Gates, any longer.

People in developing nations didn't ask to get injected with random things western capitalists invent, if you guys think it's a great idea, please volunteer your own children first #skininthegame.
I don't see him saying that on reddit, and this appears to be another right-wing conspiracy theory about him[1].

The actual idea, which he doesn't particularly seem to be "pushing", is to have invisible tattoos injected into people in the developing world as an immutable vaccine record, not an ID. It's not unlike the way vets give dogs a small tattoo dot when the dog has been spayed. Medical records don't always survive or travel with patients.

1. https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/apr/09/instagram-...

Is this really any better? Do you think there is a qualitative difference between a 'vaccine' ID, which I can assure you will have information encoded that can be used as a personal identity marker, and what the original commenter was proposing?

Is it really any better that this is happening in the "developing world"? You even make the case that it's identical to the practices we uphold to track animals.

Furthermore, appeal to authority is not proof or evidence of anything but the opinion of authority. Try to avoid doing that if you want to engage ideas in good faith.

> Do you think there is a qualitative difference between a 'vaccine' ID, which I can assure you will have information encoded that can be used as a personal identity marker, and what the original commenter was proposing?

Yes. You didn't read the article I posted, and you're already making assumptions to create a straw man.

The proposed research[1] (that Gates has been falsely linked to) proposes using quantum dots in a pattern. They need not be PII. A random person in a developing country would have no method or incentive to forge the quantum dots in their skin, so the pattern would be exactly the same on every person. Nothing personally identifiable.

You’re shadowbanned, just FYI

Edit: you’re not understanding me. People on HN cannot see your posts unless someone vouches for them. I vouched for 2, but I can now see that was a mistake and you are shadowbanned for a reason, and that is because you are acting like a jerk.

you're joking right?

if I was shadowbanned you wouldn't have replied, as my comment would be hidden...

edit your edit does not make sense. what do you mean "vouch"? sounds like you're making stuff up

>" you are acting like a jerk."

you are acting like an intellectual weakling who resorts to ad hominems.

constructive criticism = jerk, only in the mind of a a person behaving as a sensitive weakling.

Just so we can all see what is going on here, I’ve vouched for you one last time.

I believe the way shadowbanning works here is that your account is in a state where most people cannot see or reply to your comments. If someone chooses to see [dead] comments, which is a bit on their profile, they can “vouch” for such comments. They then seem to be reply-able and visible to all.

I was trying to explain something about your account state to you that you could not see yourself, as I saw some merit in your posts. I was mistaken in doing that and this is the last time I’ll interact with you.

A thought: if after 9 hours you are still bothered by something someone you will never, ever meet or know, has said in a comment on the internet, a change of perspective could be helpful. Have a good day, pdubs1

You don't understand how shadow banning works. "Seem to be"? Yeah, those are the uncertain words of someone claiming knowledge they do not have, but falsely pretend to represent.

If you knew for certain, it would not "seem", but rather, you would present the facts with concrete certainty.

My account is getting replies and upvoted on various threads.

I am sorry that you are so weak in resolve that a person's criticism, opinion, or disagreement irks you.

You must be one of those bay area snow flakes.
