Seeking recommendation: open-source project for lawyer learning to program?

Hey! I'm a lawyer teaching myself to program. I've been working through SICP [1] and online classes, but now I want to get my feet wet and pick up some real experience.

I'm looking for an open source project that I could contribute to. Any recommendations?

Possibly relevant:

- I am based in NYC/NY bar qualified - Experience working with finance data/SQL database

In an ideal world, I could find a project where my legal background would be helpful, but really the goal is a good learning environment/friendly community, so all ideas welcome. Thanks in advance!
