I suppose it's the same reason why people would stand in line to buy popcorn in a movie theatre. Sure you could buy it some other time, but it's not quite the same "experience". (and no, I would never wait in line for hours to buy an iWhatever)
I've never understood how people could want something so bad to pay an extra $900 just to be the first to buy something like that. I really don't get it.
