Ask HN: Leaving the US. Where in the world should I live as a developer?

What other cities/countries around the world would you recommend as an early 30-something developer?

Long story short, I'm tired living in the US. I've spent 10+ years living here and have yet to secure a Greencard. The uncertainty around immigration has become a huge issue in my life and I'm finally calling it quits.

My long term goals are to work for myself either running a small online business or freelancing. That was a big factor in making me want to leave the US (you can't work for yourself on H1B).

Places I've been looking at:

- Vancouver/Toronto/Montreal. Straightforward immigration + short(er) time to permanent residence.

- Berlin/Munich. I realize salaries are low and lifestyle is different.

- Back home in South America. Political/econ situation is not ideal, but family + friends are there.

- Wildcard: Estonia! Seems like they are very internet-friendly and make it easy for non-EU residents to start a business. Downside is I don't know anything about living there.

If it matters, I'm single with no children.

Thanks! :)
