Speaking Out Against Racism in Tech: All Chinese/Indian Teams

Working at several big tech companies in the bay area over the years, I've noticed an alarming trend where certain teams are dominated by one ethnicity, typically Chinese or Indian. I almost never see this with any other nationality except those two. I've never seen an all-white American team, nor an all-Nigerian, all-Brazilian, or any other type of nationality in san Francisco bay area.

Whenever I am included in interview loops for these teams, the interview pipeline is consistently primarily made up of that one ethnicity. Now what's worst is these teams are incredibly insular. At my last company, the team was 90% Chinese, where most of the tech decisions were made at lunch... where you guessed it they all spoke mandarin. It was impossible to break in and as a result I left for a team that is much more diverse and welcoming.

I think if tech companies want to get serious about diversity, they need to start cracking down on these teams that are setup to exclude others who don't match their cultural background.

I am reaching a point where I wonder if I should start reporting this to HR... But then I realize it will be a fruitless battle since HR is there to protect management.

Has anyone else noticed this trend? If so, what have you done about it?
