Ask HN: Why are companies open sourcing their Design System?

A lot of companies have chosen to open source their design systems, like Microsoft's FluentUI, Carbon from IBM, bootstrap from twitter, ant design, atlassian, etc.

I'd like to know the reasons behind this decision.

For now I can only think because of an easier integration with partners, but is it there more? Marketing?
