Does anybody else think it's crazy that companies like Hire Right and Fama get to determine on behalf of private and public sectors whether they should hire or fire you based on some arbitrary social media background checks?

As a canadian, I tried requesting my background information from them, but the form is for Americans only (requires american SSN and address), but at the same time some Canadian provinces (Ontario) have signed up with them. So there's no way to know what they have on me or whether it's even accurate. How many applicants even know this is happening when they apply for a job?
