The underlying rule of HN is pretty simple: Post anything that would interest hackers.
I would say that a man who has decided to take matters into his own hands in a trying time, instead of waiting for the solution of others, fits the bill. It's nearly the definition of hacking.

That sounds like the making of a MacGuyver movie.
Kudos to him, but this could have EASILY turned out the opposite way - which would be very tragic, although would make the story even more compelling and increase the likelihood this turns into a movie.
