The underlying rule of HN is pretty simple: Post anything that would interest hackers.

I would say that a man who has decided to take matters into his own hands in a trying time, instead of waiting for the solution of others, fits the bill. It's nearly the definition of hacking.

Goes to show that it's sometimes best to ignore the rules and do what you think is right. Great idea with the scuba gear, too!
>With his family accounted for, Akaiwa hasn't rested on his laurels. Rather, he's spent the past two weeks heading into Ishinomaki in search of other trapped survivors. Armed with a backpack, a flashlight, a Swiss Army knife, and some water, he rides his bike around the wreckage and makes his own destiny.

Kudos to him, but this could have EASILY turned out the opposite way - which would be very tragic, although would make the story even more compelling and increase the likelihood this turns into a movie.

I hope it has a happy ending though.
