Ask HN: What should I do to help as many people as possible?

Hello, HNers.

I'm a first-year college student in a third-world country, and I've decided that I want to dedicate my life to helping people, especially the underprivileged.

In your opinion, how can I achieve this? How should I go about life so that I can make a positive impact on the lives of as many people as possible?

As far as I can tell, the way to go is to join politics, win and be a good leader. But I know little of how the world works. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
