Given many will be made homeless and denied basic human rights such as health care, the EU should seriously consider welcoming American economic refugees. With population ageing in most western europe we need workers anyway and we generally speaking do welcome those seeking a better life and the freedom of having access to healthcare, decent housing and jobs.
Well they wouldn't be homeless if their government (and by extension society) would have taken care of them during a pandemic the likes of which we havent seen since the early 1900’s. As we did in Europe because you know being patriotic doesn't mean bombing nations in the name of freedom while throwing your fellow people under the bus first sign of trouble. So yes, I would like many of the new homeless americans to be given the chance of a new life in an EU country of their choosing.
This is an article that is poorly written and leaves out many things. One being that 2/3 of those unemployed or underemployed have been getting more money than they did when they were working (not "in some cases" as the article suggests). In no way should people have been late on rent yet since the extra $2,400 a month doesn't run out till next week. Those people have been fully taken care of already...you are talking about things you clearly have no grasp of because you don't even live in the US to see what is going on.
Those comments i replied to ticked me off. I just cant understand how such a great country has been revealed to be a fraud. I simply can’t. Also I didnt call America a shithole. I am referring to the US and the current dangerous path its taking. Other countries in America, i.e. Canada seem to be fine - albeit not perfect. If you can clarify how many on HN dont find the current state of affairs problematic I’d give you a few beers. I love the US for what i thought it represents but right now I feel let down.
Edit: I am genuinely looking for answers. Many times when the topic of the US as a democracy has been brought up in conversations with either brits, french, germans, i had to defend the us as an example of how things should be and had faced strong disagreements, many supporting it is what we all see today the US is, and this was years before 2020. I feel like a clown for having been so passionate in my defence of that country. Heck i wanted an EU modeled around it. Now we see an utterly corrupt, potentially authoritarian, country with serious disregard for human rights and a total lack of respect for it’s own.
Looks like 'the radical left' seem to be something the current establishment are concerned about. Maybe a good time to take a look at what that group suggests and start supporting that instead of letting you be scared by 'liberals'.
As a european it is absolutely beyond me by which skullduggery one could convince a people not to want general public health insurance. It is truly baffeling.
Take it to the streets and start fixing your country. Also please make sure that in the future no insane person gets the nuclear codes.
Also absolutely baffling why this batshit crazy dude still has 40% support. What is wrong with you?
As an American, a significant influx of Americans into a country that offers cheap/free health care would significantly burden your health care systems. Americans eat bad diets, don't do great at exercising, and we rarely visit the doctor until our medical conditions are already critical (on average).
That said, there might be good opportunities for other OECD countries to take advantage of healthy and educated Americans who are fed up with our inability to affect political change for the better.
> One in three renters failed to make their full payment in the first week of July...
This is pretty common. There are a lot of reasons why a huge portion of US renters can't manage to get the check into the landlord by the 5th of the month. Better to check how many are consistently x days (usually 30) behind on rent.

Ok, downvote me. I don't care.
Better to keep the comments centered on the topic of the article.
