Ask HN: What does it take to go from B.S. 5 YOE SDE to a Machine Learning role?

I worked in a DevOps/Infrastructure roles for about 3 years and am about to hit 3 years doing backend development. Recently, I've been thinking about the different career paths to go down or try next.

I have a BS in Computational Math and wonder if a ML / Deep Learning path would be more interesting.

Any advice or perspective would be appreciated.
