Ask HN: Is there data available on the number of startups in existence?

One of the things I am interested in looking at are the numbers of startups that exist in North America, but I am coming up with entrepreneurship centric (Not web startup specific) and generally don't cover what I am looking for.

Does information on the number of startups that exist? Maybe even location, size, and industry?
