Ask HN: Why has Search given way to Recommender Systems?

Instead of providing a way to search through any given space intelligently by giving unbiased results, search in general has been replaced by recommender systems, which take the searcher's search history into account to provide search results that the searcher might be satisfied with. It seems like recommender systems are the antithesis of search, and result in echo chambers of various kinds.
