It’s not even worth pointing out and discussing R historical context. Winning and power are the only motivators. Everything, -everything- else is on the table to those ends.
Its like the meme of sitting in a burning room and saying I'm fine. We are not fine. We are not good at all. We have moved so far to the right that the center of 25 years past is now seen as extremist left.
> We have moved so far to the right that the center of 25 years past is now seen as extremist left.
Here's an example of the center 25 years ago, something Bill Clinton said in a state of the union address:
> All Americans, not only in the States most heavily affected but in every place in this country, are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country. The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants. The public service they use impose burdens on our taxpayers. That's why our administration has moved aggressively to secure our borders more by hiring a record number of new border guards, by deporting twice as many criminal aliens as ever before, by cracking down on illegal hiring, by barring welfare benefits to illegal aliens. In the budget I will present to you, we will try to do more to speed the deportation of illegal aliens who are arrested for crimes, to better identify illegal aliens in the workplace as recommended by the commission headed by former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. We are a nation of immigrants. But we are also a nation of laws. It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years, and we must do more to stop it.
How would this be seen today? Extremist left or extremist right?
It’s “funny” you use an example of how Democrats went right as a counter example to things shifting to the right. Because it’s just highlighting exactly what was claimed.

It's “funny” that every counter example I could give to the claim that there was a shift to the right in the last 25 years actually just proves that there was as a shift to the right until the last 25 years, which then turns into "exactly what was claimed".
But isn't it that what has happened is the Democrat party has moved so far left that they've abandoned more centrist values, ceding ground to the right?
At the time, he said "I believe the overwhelming view of the Republican Conference in the Senate is that this nomination should not be filled, this vacancy should not be filled by this lame duck president". His other concern was were the parties reversed (a GOP president and a Democrat-controlled Senate), the Democrats would not allow a nomination to proceed in such a circumstance. This concern was based on multiple factors, notably prior comments made by Senator Biden to that effect.
In this case, not only are the Senate and Presidency both GOP, but Trump is not a lame duck president. It appears disingenuous for pundits and media talkers to even make such a comparison.
Even if Trump WERE a lame duck, Mcconnell's opinions may have been altered after the Democrats attempted to smear their prior nominee with allegations of rape and gang-rape. It is safe to assume that one would consider any prior niceties to be off the table after that, no matter the party.

Those involved in the insurrection against the United States Government need to be sent to Gitmo.
Torture! Now!
