Not quite right. Rather, either it is adopted by the adult entertainment industry first, then spreads to other spaces like medical applications, or it goes no where.
So, when they develop full body suit versions of these, i'm guessing society ends?
Who woulda thought, not climate change, global war, massive upheavel, nope, just everyone trapped in their own personal pleasure suit until they waste away.
Before anyone takes this seriously, this is supposed to be half hearted.
It reminds me a bit of the game in the second Red Dwarf book though and i've seen and read enough other sci-fi on this topic to know where this leads.
I don't think that can happence since Factorio has been released, too much fun building factories, possibly powering the VR worlds for the rest of the lazy bums. ;-)
"This paper introduces novel hand-worn hydraulic SSDs (Skin stretch device) that can induce 3-axis tangential forces to the skin via a tactor. The developed SSDs are controlled by new soft microtubule muscles (SMMs) which are driven by hydraulic pressure via custom miniature syringes and DC micromotors."
Found it really annoying that the 'scientific writing' piece, in the link, doesn't actually explain what is the novelty and how it works, even after all of that preamble on what it 'could do' in the future.
OK, that's the 1-pixel version. Now it needs to become an array. Hydraulic pressure in flexible tubes has often been used as a muscle-like actuator, but this is the smallest version so far.
I've been working in the VR industry for about 6 or 7 years now. I remember at first there were all these really exciting haptic glove projects. I even built my own, at one point. And yet, here we are, 2020, I've made two entire people (with help from my wife, of course), and the haptics market has yet to deploy something more interesting than vibrating dinosaur-grabby-claw-controllers that vibrate a little when you push your hand clean through a 3D object.
Let me impart some wisdom, having taught myself to sew just about every possible fabric I could get my hands on chasing this particular dragon: Gloves will never work for consumer haptics. If you're putting fabric on the palm or under fingers you're doing it wrong.
I'm all for overfinger exo as long as I can 1. wash it and 2. it only needs to come in one size to fit the vast majority of people.

The porn industry is going to love this.

The actual novel design for a haptic device:
