Why can't the top developers pool their money together and invest into an ecosystem that is more fair? They make enough profit. They could easily lead with a carrot (if you invest, you get preferential treatment). I understand the scale of this problem is immense but it seems that the duopoly of having only two choices is damaging to the high value companies on this platform and they are aggressively going to extract profit from them (of course the small players too but...one would need the top players).
If Epic doesn't win, then this (invest in an alternative) needs to be the next step. Seriously. We need to fight for sovereignty or we'll lose ground in more ways than we can imagine.
Agree. We absolutely cannot let Google chase after Apple like this - it will crush innovation, and consolidate all services into 3 or 4 monolithic companies.
For example with Apple, it's very clearly becoming a bad idea to do anything they may also want to do.
Why would anyone in their right mind take on the risk to:
A) Buy Apple's developer licenses and tools
B) Learn Apple's Apple-Only-Languages
C) Build applications for Apple ecosystem
D) Let Apple gather information about your pricing and success
E) Pray that they do not deem you successful enough to compete with
We give walmart and amazon endless headache for using data gathered from people selling their products on walmart/amazon shelves to launch competing products, yet we applaud apple for launching apple fitness or whatever while the #1 fitness app on the apple tv is peloton's workout app? How long until apple delves into Apple Dating because they need to scrounge up more new growth? How long could tinder survive while having 30% less money to reinvest back into the product than a hypothetical Apple Dating?
I can't believe that 2020 is making Windows look like a respectful steward of open platforms.
The top developers did. They worked at Apple, pooled their resources, and invested an ecosystem more fair than the market. They did a good (too good?) job.
Stallman was right yet again. If people want to stop being shocked at the inevitable abuses by big tech, they should probably read his book and his blog.
When the open source advocates didn’t like what the closed source companies did, they created open source alternatives. In the case of Linux, those alternatives were so good, that even Azure runs twice as many Linux instances as Windows instances. They won by creating something better.
Android compatible hardware is such a commodity, it’s not that difficult for a company to buy in bulk from an ODM, and put a custom build of AOSP on it. The market just really doesn’t care enough outside of China.
Seems the Pinephone is selling OK and that's basically what it is. I backed the Librem 5 and my batch is supposed to start shipping in late November. Most people don't seem to care but more are starting to as time goes on. Despite assurances every privacy advocate should be wary of contact tracing.

EDIT: some additions
Damn it, read that right as I was taking a sip of coffee.
Side note: TIL my key board is water proof
Windows has always been substantially more open than Android or iOS, it's just taken people awhile to realize it.
