You don't need a protocol "Swiss Army Knife", curl, to query dictd servers. The protocol is so simple, netcat or any other TCP client works just as well.
echo -e DEFINE all $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6 $7 '\n' QUIT|nc -vvn 216.18.20.172 2628|col -bx|less
echo -e MATCH all prefix $1 '\n' QUIT|nc -vvn 216.18.20.172 2628|col -bx|less
While we're talking dictionaries, a related question: why are there no (so few, open-source, English) pronunciation guides out there? Lots of perfectly intelligent people can often be heard repeating a way-off pronunciation.
We have made spell-checkers more-or-less useful, we have huge collections of semi-trustworthy information at our fingertips, and robots to answer questions. But. I'm sure people struggling with learning languages different from their native tongue would very much appreciate typing in a word and hearing a semi-trustworthy pronunciation. Why oh why?
