Ask HN: Are there great open source tools to extract stats from databases?

I think I saw some once but I'm not sure how they are called.

Basically I would like if my boss would be able to make his own statistics/reports from our database with a web ui.

A bit like a pivot table in Excel maybe. You would select some fields to be grouped as and which field to use as a sum/avg...
