Is anyone hosting their own server that largely provides the same basic functionality as Facebook (status updates, pictures, etc) but on your own server? I would like to build a service for my extended family that handles this basic everyday flow in a way that is familiar for Facebook users but otherwise completely private. Is there any open source software that is trying to achieve this?

I haven't set it up so I can't comment on how easy it is to install or user-friendliness compared to Facebook.

I think of Mastodon more as a Twitter replacement than a FB replacement. But maybe that would be good enough.

Try Friendica. Same functionality as Facebook, but open, like Mastodon. Mastodon : Twitter. Friendica : Facebook.
