Resoume is a project I have been working on for the last 10 month - alone.
Where I want to go with the project?
My goal is to create a platform which focuses on your online presence.
So I started with a resume and portfolio builder which can be shared via a custom link or your own subdomain by now.
The next bigger step is to create a profile builder. A simple one-pager, where you can add an about text, an image, show some of your work and add your social media accounts.
That's a pretty website and an interesting approach. Some comments:
- Your "Which resume would you choose?" To be honest, I'd choose the one one the left, it's cleaner and gives just the information I want from a candidate.
- As a "stand out" resume, the one on the right has some rough edges, it has emojis, "cv's" would be better "CVs", resume and CV are synonyms, no need to list both, the non-English quotes, using a hyphen where you should use an en-dash "January 2020 – present", definitely needs polish.
- In lots of places your would never put a photo of yourself on a CV, there are quite a few locale-specific conventions like that, do you have the flexibility for that? Perhaps have locale-specific templates?
- If aiming for a US audience (and I guess you are, resume is the usual US name for what would be a CV in the UK), you'd be better posting this late afternoon in Europe :-)
- It's been a while since I checked the comparison. But it is good to know that you would actually choose the left one. This means others would too. So I need to work on that for sure.
- I heard from a US user that a photo is a no-go so I added the feature to hide it in the templates. But here in Germany it is pretty common to add a photo.
- Ahh good tip, I need to consider the time of my post!
Speaking of UK/Europe, the cookie notice on this site (one of those “if you continue to use this site...” ones) should be changed. Because it’s annoying and a dodge, but also because “This does not represent valid consent, even if the mechanism also includes an ‘OK’ or ‘Accept’ button.”
Yeah, I hate them to but this was the easiest solution I had at. I will offer a decline option very soon because I am not so much interested in the analytics anymore.
If you ever want to use Resoume, I would give you a free upgrade on your account for your help.
I would need the email you used for the registration to do so :)
You can have 5 or 10 applications at the same time. But you can iterate, delete, recreate and download them as many times as you want.
I am not a featured post but in the marketplace on AppSumo. So it is much harder to get noticed by the audience. They have different outreach stages, depending on the number of positive reviews. So in the beginning it is up to you to get five 4 star reviews. After that they will mention you in the fb group. Also the share between you and AppSumo is better I think. But not 100% sure.
Looking good. Some feedback as someone who has screened many tech resumes.
- Design is one thing to think about but I think you'd be giving your readers more value with some custom advice / structure - like how to talk about the value you've created at a position rather than simply listing responsibilities.
- As others mentioned, grammar is pretty important for CVs, so tidying up the copy you use in examples and the rest of your site would be good.
- The pricing is confusing. What is 'an application'. Don't I get the PDF and then I can use it to apply to as many places as I need? I know it's almost an unspoken rule to have 3 pricing options, but I would just go for one in this case and have a link to the subscription/hosting service with its own page and pricing rather than confusing people there.
- I have prepared some guidelines like "how to write a resume" but it would be better to prepare examples and show them the hints inline..I guess.
- Ah yea few people actually asked what 10 applications mean. You can download your resumes as many times as you want but you can only have 10 at the same time.
- I thought about removing the subscription model completely and go with lifetime accounts, at least for the beginning.
What do you think?
Woah...Unfortunately not. I decided to use social login as it is one of the safest way to implement user registration. Do you have any social account? Maybe LinkedIn?
Otherwise, I am sure, I could add you manually, if you are interested.
It might be useful to make some sample PDF outputs available. I wanted to see how finished products might look. Mockups don't really scratch this itch. And when I'm at your landing page, I don't care enough yet to invest the nontrivial effort needed to produce them myself.
Thanks :)
It does currently not exist. I made sure the details can be extracted from the resume and are in order.
I thought about adding a score based on a job description.
As others have said, very nice looking site. Small suggestion, change the two generic people images - seems all sites use those today and the rest of your site design is so nice you don't need to be generic.
I use to be in the job board/resume space and built a resume reviewer and builder. A few things you might want to add in the future:
- Analysis of the current resume to recommend passive vs active works, spelling mistakes (happens all the time), and length (shorter is better). This were big hits with users.
- Templates of resumes - in the U.S. we don't put our picture on the resume, so good to see you have templates that support different country needs.
- ATS readiness is awesome, but most people don't know what that is. I would just describe why important and not go into the ATS details.
Uff Thanks for the great insights!!
I want to offer a score based on the job description.
- Maybe I can replace "ATS" with "software" because more people understand the word software than ATS but still link to the blog article. What do you think?
I’m not impressed by the examples visible on the homepage. Not bad, but not really good either. I think I did a better job for my CV and website, as well as few friends’ CV redesign than that. I wouldn’t pay for the service if I had to make a CV, as it’s missing the premium design a paid service should deliver.
Oh okay, makes me a bit sad to hear that but it's fine as well because people are actually paying for the service.
If you don't mind I would love to see the work you have done. Maybe I can improve the service even more with your help :)
Sorry it’s privacy sensitive data and making them anonymous would take too much time.
An example of something that put me off is: on Gobie’s CV, there is a mix a sheriff and non sheriff on the same document, this make the name and title styles clash which each other than working cooperatively. Also, there seems to be at least 6 different font sizes (excluding name) used in the same document. Playing on font size is a veey good way to create contrast, but too much creates inconsistencies.
Otherwise it’s cool people are using your service. I think they’ll enjoy it even more after you fix some of the styling issues.
In the US sometimes the picture can be a detriment because then the employer can be sued for discrimination based on age, gender, race etc. That is one factor that will keep people from adding their image or street address to a resume.
Ah yes, I didn't knew that a few month ago until someone mentioned it. But you have the option now to hide the picture in the templates :)
Maybe I need to highlight that somewhere in the website.
- how does this product help users get past ATS? I wasn't clear what this product does
besides helping with some generic design.
- "experts" in the business of resume writing and folks who claim to review many resumes
on a regular basis often recommend either a simple, no-frills resume, optimized for each job
applied to or a "pretty" resume (images, color, exotic fonts, multiple columns), similar to
the examples on your page. Can you share why you believe your design should be used over a
simple, primarily text resume?
Hmm though question.
If you don't know how ATS extract data, use a text-based resume and the right keywords. A word document is most of the time, the best choice. But if you know how the data extraction works, you can play around with the layout and design. Imagine we have a scale from -4 to 4. I will put you at 1 with the template because the data can get extracted in the right order, and the keywords for the sections are commonly used.
But the rest is (currently) up to you. Read the job description correctly. What keywords are they using there? Skills mention earlier are more important than the ones at the bottom.
Whether a "pretty" resume is better than a simple text-based resume is highly subjective.
So for me, I would prefer the "pretty" one. It communicates to me that the candidate put in the extra work. Or at least a bit more effort than the simple one. But again, highly subjective. I got actually hired because the CV I created caught their eyes. It was mentioned during the interviews. That is why I created resoume :)
Hmmm...there is no "right" way to pronounce it, since it is a made up word, but I pronounce it like this: Resoume(ˈrɛzou:meɪ)
Long response, but I hope that answers your question :D
Hey hey,
Yes, I did not want to display 2-page CVs on the landing page. But apart from my CV in the middle, the rest are real applications. Not everyone has a lot of work experience when they start their journey :)
Oh, and they got the job with the CVs mentioned on the landing page.
Regarding the ATS, here is a response I gave to a similar question:

Looks neat, but as someone else mentioned having the option to use a stand alone account would be even better. I will never personally use sites that require Oauth to make accounts, and I suspect others may feel the same way.
This might be true...I used it because it is one of the safest way to implement user registration. But maybe I need to introduce a solution without a social media acc.
I've always felt, no resume is burdened by the fact that I need one. My best opportunities have come through the fact that the person hiring me has never looked at mine.

"People always underestimates the value of a good portfolio. A portfolio gives evidence to your skills and experinces."
"People always underestimate..." and "experiences".
Landing page looks very clean, it was not immediately obvious to me though how the pricing works, what counts as an application?
How is AppSumo working out for you? I'm considering also listing my project with them.

Is there any way to create a user without those?

> 90% of large companies use ATS to analyze applications. You could get rejected due to missing keywords or formatting errors.
Any plans to incorporate an ATS-like analyzer/does this feature already exist?
