Things said in public during negotiations are part of the negotiations. This is said publicly just before Friday talks is to signal firmness to EU. The hope is that EU backs off.

If EU negotiators don't give anything more, UK position collapses unless they really intent to go on with No-Deal Brexit.

No-deal hurts UK more than EU, so I don't see why EU would flinch. Maybe they allow wording that allows Johnson to pretend he got something.

I've been on a couple of negotiating courses and the first thing they teach you is you have to be prepared to walk away.

Having said that I'm sure the EU will see right through this stuff but the Brexiteers will lap it up.

The UK, keeps repeating ad nauseum (to their own public hilariously) that the EU is not trying and the UK alone is heroically trying its best to reach a deal. But in reality the UK is at fault, as you cant expect to leave a club and get all the benefits of the club, and pretending that the club is being completely unreasonable, only plays to your own audience, as it does not change the clubs outlook. Its all so bizarre.
