Everybody’s Lying About the Link Between Gun Ownership and Homicide (medium.com)

A gun isn't just a gun. Most of the countries with more guns pr. 100 people than the USA don't allow private ownership of handguns, or if they do they aren't allowed to keep them at home. Of them, I think only Switzerland allows automatic guns.
