this is bizarre. I do not see how just blocking a user isnt a sufficient form of moderation for party chat harassment, why would you need to bring in sony to the mix of this??
If you're egregiously violating their guidelines I would want Sony to be involved. I shouldn't have to block every racist bully I come across. The racist bully should be removed from the platform after a warning or two.
Ehhh Id rather take the trade-off of just manually blocking than Sony taking a big brother approach. You may have a higher sensitivity to harmful words though. I think that having Sony intervene on every instance of a troll on a platform targeting young adult demographic is going to be a fairly tall task.
More than this, by what standard is something blockable and who determines this.
Maybe it just doesn't stop at allegedly hurtful words, Maybe two folks are discussing something political and someone else is offended by these hurtful ideas. I mean, Amazon just banned some books having an alternative Covid 19 narrative, so our isn't out of the realm of possibility..
> I submit far too many people are expecting parenting, someone to come to their aid.
Quality post. The victim mindset has a way of latching on to the ego like a parasite and taking over. We could all use a little pest control. I happen to know the best kind.
Maybe I should have left it. Each time I make the argument: conversations are two way streets, that we all have the option to manage our responses, etc...
It seems like the battle for real expression, however beautiful or ugly it may be, is already lost.
It may be lost in the legal department and "save the children" legislative assemblies.
In any case, you are not wrong.
In the vast majority of these more toxic interaction attempts, others employing their many options besides righteous indignation do tend to enjoy far less toxic outcomes.
And when modeled by a few notable contributors, its catchy. Entire communities can be inoculated.
I have seen this establishing of norms turn toxic people into strong advocates.
It all starts with everyone understanding what their options are and that they really can manage their responses toward good.
Of course that's work we have to do and the work, futile in my view, to attempt to control others seems to attract more energy and here we are.
Humor is one of my favorite gotos. It offers a very wide range of outs for all involved.
This doesn't seem great for voice chat; even though it is already possible (either using third-party software or a built-in record feature) to record calls made over Discord, Skype, Zoom and other systems, it seems like a privacy violation and may also be illegal in states which require two-party consent for recording private voice or video calls. (Which is probably why Sony is putting this up front so they can claim that users should have no expectation of privacy, even when they don't suspect that they are being recorded.)
On the other hand, there is some precedent for reporting text chat, such as submitting spam reports for SMS or online games.

When people know how to manage a conversation, the bully faces strong norms that do not reward like righteous indignation does.
You could laugh at them too. Works wonders, no joke.
