Summary: WWII was caused in large part by how the Allies treated Germany after WWI. If Biden wins, Democrats need to help make the material conditions in red states better, to address the underlying conditions that led to people supporting Trump.
I think those areas hate coastal elites because of economic inequality and wounded pride. vestiges of the Civil War that have never been dealt with.
Think about WWII history. After WWI the Allies ground their heel on Germany, creating terrible economic conditions and a stew of resentment for Hitler to take advantage of. After WWII we helped Germany rebuild and now they're an ally. If we had had a Marshall Plan after WWI Hitler may have turned out as just another bad portrait painter.
If Biden wins Democrats need to be gentlemanly victors and help the losers up off the mat. I'm not talking about appeasement, I'm saying we need to win and then be gracious about it.
It's not that I don't understand the article, it's that I disagree with it.
Helping nazis and white supremacists "off the mat"? No. They need to get over the civil war and decide if they want to be in this country or not. That means:
- Stop with the racist behavior.
- Stop making it difficult for anyone but MAGAs to vote.
- Get the government out of our lives, like they say they want, which means lay off abortion and birth control.
- Stop trying to turn this country into a christian theocracy.
I've been living with this shit all my life (63 years), and we've been heading in the wrong direction for much of that time.
Being "gracious" is fine. I'm OK not rubbing an election victory in their faces, but every vestige of the Republican party needs to be wiped out.
