Should probably specify it’s just in the UK. I assumed since it was the BBC, but still...

Indeed... These companies have just too much market power and have lots of legislation to make them safe
It's been illegal to sell locked phones on Canada since 2017, and long before that carriers were forced to unlock a phone after a set period of time (18 months iirc).
That's pretty important. Has Canada been working towards more updated-technical laws since then, forgive the ignorance.
