I don't see why the Amazon employees cannot use gloves (as they probably actually should).
It sounds more like a marketing/publicity idea/stunt :

I stopped buying electronics from Amazon for this reason. They open all video card boxes and it is very likely you will not get the card you ordered. I was ripped off twice by them. Shame on me for falling for it twice.
