It can only succeed in the city taxes it as farm land. Industrial taxes on it will kill it. Retrofit of old steel frame buildings might have corrosion problems with the water involved when the fertilizing salts are added. Concrete frame is OK. At the heart is the low cost of farmland and sun, compared to city land with LED lights. 24/7 grow cycle helps.
More like inevitable as land becomes more scarce.
We're nowhere near the point where we can't feed the population using existing agriculture land. We're a very long ways off from needing solutions like vertical farming.
For things that don’t transport well, or need to be super fresh and in smaller qty, I think indoor farming is great. Growing a million kg of cauliflower? Use a field.
Maybe it's a desirable solution to reduce farm space and rekindle pristine wildlife.
vine yards, tomatoe owners and others would certainly concure strongly.
