Is it possible to build a startup as a joint venture with the internet?

I have a social network construct that is supposed to be built with the help of the internet community. But could it work and if so what is needed for a real success?

If you look at the internet, sites like Reddit and Twitter, if they have something they are super excited about, it spreads super fast. The last thing I remember was the #proudboys hashtag, which was supposed to discredit the far right group and show gay couples instead. Similar instances were the #trashtag and #teamtrees.

They are spread to "make a change" and people are willing to contribute and be a part of it. But these "movements" are relatively short living. The forest fires posts for example are posted every season with a call for action.

So if you take the reasons for their action and implement them in a project, are they willing to go the extra mile or is it just the hype?

If they help and be a part of it, it could be a benefit for the less fortunate. You surf, post and help to moderate and take part in the decision making to get earnings for own projects and those of others. It has to be fun of course and they can help mold it in the right way with a democratic approach.

Everybody wants to go "viral" and have overnight success, but would this be possible with such a project? Or should you not even try to go viral and start with a small team until it is ready for the masses, like the Bitcoin Project?
