Ask HN: Is it possible to buy a .er (Eritrea) domain name?
Everything I’ve read online says that it is not possible, but everything I’ve read is years out of date. I’m really hoping there’s a way to happen, because I have a good name in mind ending with .er

Or faster.er?
Even the few scattered .gov.er domains appear to be using some US-based single person(?) consultancy for nameservers, presumably for reliability.
If you Bing for .er, there's nothing other than an EriTel site that takes ten minutes to load, and a bunch of outdated webmail interfaces.
Does the country even have wired service at all? A traceroute to the only ASN in Eritrea is over 1200ms from the US and contains hostnames like 'asia-broadcast-sat' or 'absatellite.net'. 2G mobile calls within the country are $0.20/minute and a 64 kbps connection is USD$300 a month.
The retail site on Eritel advertises 9 megabit down, 1 megabit up for $16000/m. This is "new pricing" updated 2018.
