A historian's view of the roots of laïcité (the separation of church and state) in France. Which gives background information with regard to various current events. My conclusion is that Islamists hate France because their history with Napoleon, while they hate the US because of their foreign policy.
The history of France and the muslim world started a thousand years before Napoleon. The Arab invasion of Europe ended in France. France played a key role in the Crusades.
I don't think that Islamists have a particular problem with France, though, this is the same for the whole of Europe. They have a problem with the West in general because of both its Christianity (and it should be noted the latest attacks in France targeted Churches) and liberalism.
