Ask HN: Sales Engineer Career Path

Can anyone with experience as a sales engineer share their experiences? In my head I am thinking the role is mostly talking to people about their needs, learning the technical ins and outs of a product, and working on POCs to show how it can be used. Is that what the job usually entails?
