Guessing part of it is there is much greater social value in signaling your “significant” support for Democrats than your “significant” support for Republicans in most academic cultures. So it probably amplifies and overstates the Democrat bias in the higher education business to use political contributions as the measure.
Academics is a social program dependent to a large degree on government largesse, and people in those industries tend to vote Democrat. That should be no surprise...
