Really interesting and helpful post, thanks for sharing. I'm from the "no-frills"[0] school of thought formed back when IDE refactoring tools were just fancy search-and-replace and syntax highlighting was always just regexp. LSP has changed the game by making intelligent environments interoperable but has it also supported the trend towards general purpose IDEs. I think there's still a lot more room to explore language specific functionality beyond LSP. Still, renewed focus on IDE backends is a step in the right direction. Let's see where that takes us.
