Seriously, do people remember OSNews of yore? It was sort of like HackerNews for a certain kind of discussions (non startupy, more tech/programming/os related), and more friendly than Slashdot...
Yes and full of cool OS design discussions, Oberon, BeOS, Archimedes, Amiga, Atari, TOS, Singularity, CosmOS, ...
To be fair, when almost everyone is busy cloning UNIX for the nth time, with its clunky design and unsafe by design systems programming language, there are hardly any OS news worth reading about.
They are blowing it way out of proportion. The check is only done when you install the app or update it, not every single time you open it.
