FYI, the suggested workaround posted by amazon staff in the article doesn't work either.
You are supposed to be able to do a full GDPR data request and that should contain your orders. I made my request a week ago and have not yet received the data, so can not verify if that works.
this has the potential to backfire much as mandatory mediation has for some companies. if enough people start making GDPR requests it will likely quite quickly create a backlog of a long time and they may be encouraged to renable useful features like is mentioned to reduce the load
