If he moved on to better laptop(s) why would he want to come back now? And is Boot Camp still a thing... wouldn't that do the trick and allow you to boot directly into Linux?

Because this is the best one regarding size/perfomance/silence (the 3 things he cares for) now...

Boot Camp was the Windows drivers and setup program. It's not available in M1. And for Linux you need drivers for the graphics and other stuff. It will happen, just not now...
