Ask HN: What does “platform” mean for software/web?

I've worked at FAANGs and startups over the past half decade and repeatedly heard internally and externally on blogs about building "platforms."

But it seems like different people have very different meanings for the word - what is your definition of "platform" (specifically in software or web dev/businesses) and why is it higher leverage to build a platform than a non-platform?
